According to Philips’ head of Product Marketing and Strategy for flat TV, Danny Tack, SED televisions will never go on sale. This does seem to contradict recent SED TV announcements by both Toshiba and Canon (see posts below) which indicate they’re preparing for full scale SED TV production. See story here: avzombie.com

Canon’s flat panel TVs to arrive in 2007

(Business Times (Malaysia)

CANON Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the local marketing arm of Tokyo-based electronics giant Canon Inc, will introduce its flat panel television to Malaysians in the fourth quarter next year.

Canon Malaysia’s consumer imaging and information division assistant director Calvyn Laang said he expects demand for flat panel TVs to pick up further as the Beijing Olympics approaches.

The TVs, which use surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) panels technology, will help Canon make display panels that are thinner than conventional flat screens.

This may be one of the first country specific releases announced for SED TV. It’s interesting that it has been announced by Canon instead of Toshiba or SED Inc. Any comments?

An interesting story from the Sydney Morning Herald:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/World/Matsushita-Hitachi-to-triple-LCD-output/2006/05/31/1148956403664.html

The two firms have decided to boost their LCD output capacity to fend off competition from rivals such as Sony Corp and Sharp Corp, which are also moving to drive up their production capacity, officials at the two firms said.

But Toshiba, a partner at the trilateral venture, will refrain from joining the greater investment plan this time, partly because it will put priority on developing the next-generation flat-screenSED TV in conjunction with Canon Corp, industry officials said.

SED TVs, short for surface-conduction electron-emitter display TVs, will hit the shelves in autumn 2007 or thereafter.

As for production at the Chiba venture, Matsushita and Hitachi had planned to increase the annual LCD panel capacity to 2.5 million units in April 2007, the two firms said.

But the two have decided to bring forward the timing of the implementation of the 2.5 million-unit plan to January of that year, while planning to hike the annual capacity to 5 million during the second half of 2007, they said.

This is another good indication that Toshiba is moving ahead as planed with the SED TV development.
