A must read for SED TV fans, full story at Yahoo News

Reuters reported today that Canon’s loss in the Nano lawsuit could cost it millions more if they decide to continue with SED TV production.

A few excerpts:

“But now that the lawsuit has caused Canon to lose the license, a fresh agreement with Texas-based Nano-Proprietary Inc. could be worth millions of dollars more, lawyers said.”

“It seems strange Canon managed to go all the way to trial and lose,” said Peter Godwin, a Tokyo-based partner at law firm Herbert Smith. “Assuming they were advised they were at risk, you’d expect a company of the size of Canon to have reached a settlement before that.”

“But clearly, it takes two to settle and the patent is a very important one,” Godwin said. “Both Canon and Nano may have taken the view that the legal fees involved were insignificant compared to the benefits should they win.”

A person close to the trial said the parties may reach a settlement before the court rules on damages due the U.S. firm.

The next session of the trial is set for the first available date after April 2.

A new licensing deal between Canon and Nano-Proprietary could be a pay-as-you-use contract and may be priced well above the original one-time upfront contract, Credit Suisse analyst Kunihiko Kanno wrote in a note to his clients.

“That would have an impact on (Canon’s) profitability.”

It makes one wonder once again how such a huge corporation as Canon found themselves this far down an undesirable path.

Smarthouse.com.au has reported that Samsung has made approaches to get access to SED TV technology.

This came after Canon faced the possibility that it may have to drop SED TV technology after a US court ruled that Canon violated an agreement with Texas-based Nano-Proprietary.

Samsung insiders say this has opened up the door for them to investigate the possibility of obtaining a licence to produce SED TVs.However, barring an overturning of the decision at appeal, Canon will need to sign a new deal with Nano-Proprietary before any products can come to market.  Damages in the case are still to be decided.

First came Toshiba SED TV, then came Canon SED TV. Can Samsung SED TV really be next? What are the possibilities that Canon would drop this entirely after years of research and who knows how much in development costs?

I’m looking for comments on SED TV alternatives. Realistically it may be up to a couple of years before the Canon SED TV is available at a price that anyone can stomach.

What is available today that can bridge the gap until SED television is here?

LCD has it’s drawbacks with picture quality and contrast and plasma sets do cost more and consume a lot of power. However, those are the two main choices right now.

Please recommend specific models, either from personal experience or just what your current dream TV is. I’ll post info and reviews on the top 10 models suggested on this page SED TV Alternatives. Thanks.

SED TV is officially Canon SED TV as of January 29 after the purchase of Toshiba’s shares in SED Inc.

Canon has stated that they plan to begin mass production of SED TV panels in the last  quarter of 2007, at a rate of approximately 1,000 panels per month.

Also, Canon is planning higher volume production of SED televisions and SED panels starting in 2010.
From Redorbit

“For now, Canon will produce a limited number of SED panels at its Hiratsuka plant in Kanagawa Prefecture and ship them to Toshiba for TV assembly. The two companies plan to start selling SED TVs under their own names later this year, with combined monthly sales targeted at 1,000 units.

Canon will then establish a mass-production system and launch integrated manufacturing operations on its own.”

Good news from Canon after all the bad news of the last 6 weeks or so.
