The November issue of Home Theater Magazine mentioned that Sony’s FED will be out in 2009, maybe that’ll wake Canon up. Since SED is a subset of FED the displays should perform very close to the same way. Hopefully Sony’s FED will be priced reasonably and once Canon’s SED is available the competition will help to keep the prices down.

Canon’s FED technology was always planned on being produced on printable flexible substrates to keep the cost down, even when they were using Nano’s technology. They are already very advanced in print technology and it fits right in. Large screen (40 plus inches) OLED displays are several years away.

What about the “highly cost” nanotubes, and this is looks to me, like some corporate conspiracy, to buy older products until they’re drained to tech maximum, and then buy the “new” SED displays…

I hope friggin Nano is happy. I can’t believe its been two years already. Seems like an eternity. Anyways, i really hope Cannon pulls through with SEDs, they WILL be the TV tech to have.

A contact in Japan told me that this program has been halted. This was a shock and could be wrong but advancing competition and high costs could be a cause. Perhaps APNT can buy everything back at a garage sale. I used to own NPI stock and continue to hold Canon forever. I hope this info is wrong but who knows for now.

Sorry everyone. If I hear better news I’ll let you know but I don’t want to put my contact on the spot.

Thanks for all the comments and emails. I admit to being impatient to see SED TV out, but Canon doesn’t listen to me! Maybe I’m still a bit annoyed at canceling my trip to CES 2007 for obvious reasons.

There are obviously a lot of factors at play here. The design is one of them for sure.

Canon is doing the right thing by waiting until they have everything lined up.

I got to play with a Sony XEL-1 for a week. It was very impressive, but not very practical.

I look forward to checking out the first SED TV within the next year or so.

RELIABILITY, TO ACHIEVE THESE AIMS WOULD
INVOLVE CONTINUOS RUNNING TESTS UNDER STRESS CONDITIONS, THIS IS TOTALLY NEW TECHNOLOGY
AND MUST BE 100% RIGHT, BEFORE RELEASE,
CES 2009 WOULD BE THE IDEAL SHOW FOR
SHOWING THE PRE PRODUCTION MODEL,

At the end of September I was talking to a Canon sales rep so I could get a quote for a maintenance agreement on our Canon office equipment and I asked the lady if she had any word on what is up with them getting their SED TV’s out and she said no. She was waiting for news on them just like everyone else as she wanted to buy one herself.

In the press release of EOS5DmkII in Japan. Canon’s executives was asked “what about ways in storing or showing photos”

The executive replied, saying that this direction seems to be a trap …and things are going on in your(the one who asked) expected direction. I think this implies they are still working at SED to complete their imaging lineup.
