SED TV still stalled as Sony OLED TV release date announced

With SED TV going nowhere at the moment, Canon and Nano-Proprietary have lost once again. Sony announced a few minutes ago that the Sony OLED TV will be released December 1, 2007. It’s only an 11″ model, but it’s the first OLED TV and the first real challenge to Plasma and LCD TV to be available to the consumer. Another sad day for SED TV fans. Press release below:
TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp said on Monday it would launch an ultra-thin flat TV based on the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology on December 1, bringing a new contender to a market dominated by LCD and plasma TVs.
It will be the world’s first OLED TV, the company said.
Sony, the world’s second-largest liquid crystal display TV maker behind Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, expects an 11-inch OLED TV with a thickness of 3 mm to sell for 200,000 yen ($1,700).
OLED panels are said to be energy efficient, make thin and light displays, offer crisp pictures and have strength in showing fast-moving images, suitable for watching sports events and action movies.
But manufacturers still face some technological challenges in making larger panels and driving down production costs to compete commercially with LCD and plasma TVs, analysts say.

I’ve been watching SED from afar, but unless SED is outrageously expensive to manufacture nand with little prospect of future cost reduction, I don’t see how worried Canon can be about Sony’s announcement of an 11″ display for $1,700.
SED TV should (I expect) be considerably less costly to produce a very high performance display than even standard backlit LCD. The only thing I see holding this back would be legal concerns a la NTP and RIM (the Blackberry mfr.’s). Legal issues of this kind when trying to market to the US, introduce a very high “pucker factor” for Sr. Exec’s making the decisions.
It is probably less of a loss to delay introduction than to face 9 figure liabilities down the road.

As I have said before on this site over and over again. SED is for all purposes dead, at least in a mass consumer sort of way. It’s window of opportunity long passed given Nano Technology’s greed. SED should have already been on display ready to supplant the inferior LCD sets but with every passing delay most of us including myself are waiting for OLED, FED or anything else that will supplant CRT, Plasma and LCD. I have said it before we will be studying Nano’s greee and Canaon’s lack of transparency and hubris when dealing with Nano. R.I.P. SED.

You may be right Nick. However, I’ll keep up with this for the time being. It sounds like Nano and Canon aren’t commenting on the matter right now so who knows what if anything is going on. Time will tell if we’re flogging a dead horse here or not.

It’s my understanding that OLED will be used to mainly replace LCD in portable and small display applications. Plasmas are are getting a lot better real quick and hopefully other manufacturers are working on their own versions of FED.
