Canon is still working on getting an SED TV produced with a panel using their own technology. Hopefully we will see a Canon SED TV display at both CEATEC in Japan starting September 30th and CES2009 in Las Vegas next January.
In my opinion, the pressure on Canon has just increased with the announcement of the imminent (2009) production of FED TVs or field emission displays from FET, a spin-off from Sony. See FED TV link. Their plans include a 60″ consumer model FED TV after beginning with FED monitor shipments for broadcast and medical applications.
Also imminent, hopefully before 2009, is the decision in the Nano-Proprietary vs. Canon licensing dispute. The last court date was supposed to be June 4 with the decision expected within the next few months.
In any case, the next 6 months are very important for the future of SED television. With realistic sized OLED TV on the horizon and the expected competition from Field Emission Technologies, Canon needs to announce SED TV production to remain ahead of the pack.

I think Canon will be able to develope their own SED technology but the real question is will they be able to produce displays at a “competitive” price with LCDs and Plasmas [and also FEDs]. If so then there will not be much of a reason to consider an LCD or a Plasma display over an SED/FED display for me. SED/FED displays do not necessarily have to be cheaper to survive and compete with LCD and Plasma because they are that much better than LCD and Plasma, assumming LCD and Plasma technologies do not close the gap much more.
IT looks like we will not see Sony’s commercial FED TVs until at least 2010 or 2011 and maybe even longer for larger displays above 50″. Samsung [and maybe other manufacturers] is also developing FED technology.
OLED displays still have issues that need to be resolved, I don’t think we’ll see large screen OLEDs until at least 2010 but once their out and their prices come down I think LCD technology will be on its’ way out. And if prices on SED/FED displays get low enough then Plasma will also disappear.

I was a diehard fan of SED TV and I was telling everyone not to buy the current technologies because they will all become obsolete soon when SED comes out. However, my opinion has changed after seeing what Pioneer is doing with their KURO TV’s. How much better can SED get and how long do we have to wait until it is affordable? In 2009 Pioneer will produce plasmas that are 9 mm deep, use less power, have immeasurable blacks and outstanding colors at a lower price than what they are selling a year ago. The lower price for two reasons:
1. Pioneer will reduce their cost by having Panasonic build their panels.
2. Plasma technology continues to mature and becomes less expensive.
The only chance SED has if it can produce that quality of picture, which I think it probably can, but at the same price and reliability as plasmas. If I have to wait another 3 or more years for that to happen, I am going plasma because I doubt it will worth the wait. If SED can drastically reduce the burn in issue, which I think it can’t, then it would definitely gets the advantage over plasmas.

I too was on the waiting list for SED years back, but decided to stop waiting and purchased a first generation 60″ KURO the day they came out. I must say, I have no regrests, I absolutely love the screen and the new ones will only be better.

fIRST OFF LETS DEAL WITH JIMD, BURN IN HAS BEEN
EASILY SOLVED SOME YEARS AGO, ITS A VERY SIMPLE METHOD TO OVERCOME, I HAVE JUST VIEWED THE LATEST
116CM PLASMA PANEL FROM PANASONIC, VERY VERY NICE
IMAGE, BUT LACKS THAT LITTLE EXTRA IN THE WAY OF
BRIGHTNESS, BUT THE VERY BIG DRAWBACK IS THE
POWER CONSUMPTION 515 WATTS, NO USE HAVING A
THIN PANEL WITH THAT SORT OF POWER USAGE,
AS FOR ANDY AND HIS PIONEER KURO, YES A VERY VERY
NICE UNIT, AGAIN LIKE THE PANASONIC SUFFERS FROM
THE SAME PROBLEMS, THESE TWO DRAWBACKS WILL BE
VERY HARD TO OVERCOME IF EVER, ITS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST, AS FOR MYSELF, SED IS DUE FOR RELEASE
IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS, I THINK THE WAIT WILL BE MORE THAN WORTH IT,
